How to filter results by series

The federal government categorizes jobs into groups or families of jobs or occupations. We call these groups a job series. The job series is a four-digit number system for organizing similar jobs. Related jobs will have series numbers that are closer together.

For example, we group medical, dental and public health jobs in numbers 0600-0699. Nurse jobs are in the 0610 series and nursing assistant is 0621.

You can search or filter by the job series name or number:

  1. You can enter a job series name or number in the search on the USAJOBS homepage.
  2. On your search results page, narrow your results with the Occupations and job series filter. Once you select the filter, you can search by job name or number and select it to apply to your search results.

What if I don’t know what series my career fits in or what federal jobs I might be interested in?

Not sure what federal jobs you're interested in? Go to the USAJOBS Career Explorer to explore jobs based on your interests. You take a short quiz about your career interests, and we’ll match you with job series.

You can also read more about classifying general schedule positions and the handbook of occupational groups and families put out by the Office of Personnel Management.
